Abstract

Bone is a living tissue whose mechanical functions are to provide rigidity, resistance and protection to the body, allowing it to have a structure that con fers support and capacity to transmit stresses. Al though there are genetic and physiological factors involved in the bone remodelling process, both its architecture and the dominant mechanisms of its biological system are closely linked to mechanical stresses. Using a validated computational model for bone remodelling of a representative sample of bone, the results show that the effects of disuse or lack of mechanical stimulation due to sedentary lifestyle, prostration or longterm microgravity can lead to severe losses of bone mass whose recovery time is three times longer than the disuse time. These results are of great importance in clinical applications applied to people of advanced age or after menopause, with significant losses of bone mass and weak recovery capacity
