Cuantificación del agua en la elaboración de cuero mediante la huella hídrica

The aim of this work was to quantify the water invol ved during natural leather production by the water footprint (WF). A local tannery was analyzed, where four main steps were identified: beamhouse, tan ning, retanning and finishing operations. The WFtotal was calculated for each operation step, as the sum of the WFgrey , WFblue and WFindirect . For WFgrey , the bio chemical oxygen demand (BOD) was used as the main parameter for effluent quality measurement; for WFblue , water evaporated during the process was considered; for WFindirect , equipment and electricity footprints were used. In WF terms, 39 liters of water are needed to produce 1 kg of leather (WFgrey = 36 l/kg, WFblue = 2.6 l/kg, WFindirect = 0.4 l/kg), when the value without considering the WF calculation is 29 l/kg leather. WFgrey contributed the most to the total (92%). The beamhouse was the step with highest water use (WFgrey = 30.7 l/kg), generating effluents with high BOD values.
