Open-air garbage dump in General Fernández Oro and proposals for improvement

Abstract

The situation of the General Fernández Oro open-air dump, in the province of Rio Negro, is surveyed and analyzed and the opinions of neighbors and informal collectors who operate in the dump are explored. The results show concern about its presence and impacts on the quality of life due to air, soil and water pollution. 38% would like it to be eradicated, which responds to the "NIMBY" attitude (Not in my backyard), where people oppose projects that have a negative impact, as occurs with the disposal of waste. The results show a lack of a comprehensive strategy for the waste management in Fernández Oro. The implementation of a technical closure of the current open-air dump and the development of a more efficient and sustainable waste management system are imperative to mitigate the current and future negative impacts in the community and the natural environment of General Fernández Oro. The waste management proposal based on circularity and phytoremediation of the property can be an encouraging strategy.
